In a closely fought by-election in Stoke-on-Trent on 3 March, the LibDem candidate, Geoffrey Knight, won the East Valley ward. The result showed the Conservatives trailing in fifth place with only 150 votes, against the LibDems 525. The Labour, BNP, and Independent candidates' votes were 496, 464, and 445.

On the same day in Solihull, the Liberal Democrats recorded a massive swing of 15.5% from the Conservatives in the St Alphege ward, a traditional Conservative stronghold. Chris Reeves gained 1673 votes for the LibDems, while the Tories got 1760 votes, a majority of 87. Labour did badly here with a mere 133 votes.

A similar swing in the General Election would result in the Liberal Democrats winning Solihull with a majority of around 4,000. The results show once again that the LibDems are gaining ground against both of the other parties, and are winning support for their policies from the public in the run-up to the general election.
