The new independent community group was formed on 10 August to support the bid by the Shropshire Wildlife Trust to purchase part of the Wrekin from Mr Holt, and also to acquire the Forest Glen site. 75 people attended the inaugural meeting at Wellington Civic Centre, called by George Evans, the well-known writer and local historian. On 28 September, a further meeting took place at the Charlton Arms in Wellington to approve the constitution of the Association, and report on progress.

A bid had been submitted to the Heritage Lottery Fund, and a successful outcome was achieved in mid-September, as well as the offer of a significant donation from a Trust. Both contributors specified that the amount paid for the sites should not be more than that determined by the District Valuer, or the funds would not be forthcoming. Negotiations are continuing with the landowners to try and agree a sale around these values. Money is needed not just for the purchase cost, but for the upkeep of paths and woodland for public benefit, including the provision of toilets and adequate parking areas for visitors.

Progress was reported on the four main areas of activity since the earlier meeting: membership, fund-raising, representation and information. A newsletter was distributed, and a website has been created at www.wrekinfriends.com which will keep everyone informed. People at the meeting were encouraged to participate in support activities. Copies of the donation forms should be available in all the local libraries, and more were given out for people to pass on to friends, neighbours, and potential sponsors. The aim is to provide wide support for the future of the Wrekin, including those parts still in private ownership. It is essential that the public demonstrate their support by giving generously to the Appeal, to help maintain this historic feature for posterity.
