Higher Turnout in Telford and The Wrekin European Elections12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 16th Jun 2004
Thanks to everyone who supported the Liberal Democrats in the European elections. Voting in the borough of Telford & Wrekin was well up on 1999. 38,244 people voted (33.2% of the electorate) compared to only 17.8% in Telford and 25.4% in The Wrekin last time. This time counting was done by local authority boundaries and not parliamentary constituencies, so a comparison with 1999 is less accurate, as part of The Wrekin is in the Bridgnorth District. The national results show a fair measure of consistency. The Conservative vote was down 9% and Labour vote down 5% (together less than 50% of the vote), Liberal Democrats up 2% to 15.1% and UKIP gaining 16.8% of the vote at the expense of both Labour and Conservative. Out of 75 seats, the Conservatives ended up with 27 seats (down 8), Labour 19 (down 6) UKIP 12 (up 9), Liberal Democrats 12 (up 2), the Green Party 2, SNP 2, and Plaid Cymru 1. Telford and Wrekin results are shown below, the West Midlands and National MEP totals will follow. Results from Telford & Wrekin Borough Council (1999 % in brackets): Conservative: 10,194; 26.60% (32.95%) Labour Party: 8,922; 23.33% (35.55%) UKIP: 8,260; 21.60% (6.00%) Liberal Democrats: 4,390; 11.43% (10.30%) BNP: 2,588; 6.69% (n/a) Green Party: 1,911; 5.00% (6.05%) Respect: 451; 1.18% (n/a) Pensioners Party: 1,271; 3.32% (n/a) Common Good: 193; 0.50% (n/a) Total vote: 38,244; 33.17% (21.6%) Related Links:Result of the 2004 European Elections in the West Midlands.
