Raw Deal from The Boundary Committee

Sat 12th Jul 2008

Shifnal and Albrighton, as part of The Wrekin constituency, have been given a raw deal by the Boundary Committee. In their Draft Recommendations for Shropshire, published on 1 July, they have created one huge division with over 11,000 electors for just three councillors. Yet they have created two compact two-member divisions for Bridgnorth which would elect four councillors with a smaller total number of electors.

On 12 June, Cllr David Murray attended the Lib Dem dinner at Wistanstow village hall in South Shropshire, where Nick Clegg MP, the Lib Dem Leader, was the guest of honour. Over 100 people were present to hear his after dinner speech about topical issues, followed by a question and answer session from members.

Lib Dem elected as Vice-Chair

Fri 9th May 2008

At the annual meeting of Great Dawley Parish Council on 1 May, Nicola Holmes, as the only Liberal Democrat left on the council, was unanimously elected as Vice-Chair. The Council is made up of 7 Labour members, 5 TAWPA, 1 Lib Dem and 1 Independent. Labour member Kuldip Sahota was elected as Chair. Only one TAWPA member has agreed to serve on any committees, so it is difficult to see what they hope to achieve for their community, if most of them do not take part in the business of the parish!

Wrockwardine Ward by-election

Fri 15th Feb 2008

A byelection for Telford & Wrekin borough council has been called in Wrockwardine Ward, as a result of one of the two councillors moving out of the area. Pat Fairclough, from the adjacent Shawbirch area, has been selected as the Liberal Democrat candidate, and will be aiming to contact people in this large geographical area before polling day on Thursday 13 March 2008.

Quote of the Week

"It sounds to me like I should vote for Vince Cable. Vince Cable was against demutualising the building societies back in the 1990s when your government was doing that. Vince Cable was sending me as an economics editor emails every three weeks, about the levels of debt through the last five years and he has been instrumental in saying that the taxpayer needs to be protected nationalising the banks and in having the upside risks as well as the downside ones are the way to go."
